Green Energy is the way forward!

Oil and gas are running out and by 2020 all new homes will rely to some extent on “Green Energy” for heating and hot water. Even now, with energy costs rising constantly, renewable or “free” energy from the sun, wind and earth makes good sense.

So how can we go green and save energy??
The first thing every householder should do is insulate – cavity wall and loft insulation is the best way to save energy and with many subsidised schemes the cost is often free or a solar panelsfew hundred pounds – and can payback in less than a year.
The second thing is to ensure that your existing heating system is efficient – a new condensing boiler and controls can save up to 40% on the average gas bill – typically £450 a year saving. With costs starting at about £1,000 payback within 2 years is possible
If you are using electric or coal (which costs about 3 times more than gas) there are grants available to switch fuel.

Solar Energy

There are two types of solar power: Solar Electric and Solar Hot Water. As the name suggests, both rely on the sun, so a south facing suitable roof is essential.
Solar Electric - also known as Solar PV (PhotoVoltaic) will provide 2 to 4 Kw of electric power depending upon the number of panels. Ideally 10 panels is the minimum number required and as each one is about the size of a desk top a fair size is needed. This type of system will generate your own electricity, but - and this is the important part - as an incentive to people investing in Solar P.V, the Fuel Companies are legally obliged to pay a rate of 41p per kilowatt generated – known as the Feed in Tariff.
Basically this will generate a tax free index linked income of about £1,000 per year for 25 years (the term of the contract). For those with £15,000 sitting in a low interest account this Solar P.V investment will return over 12% per annum.
Solar Hot Water This is much simpler and cheaper – basically 2 panels on the roof with water pipes inside. These heat up in normal daylight and provide you with domestic hot water. Linked to your existing system you will cut your hot water fuel bill by about 70%and from April to October the solar panels will give you abundant free hot water.
Costs of this will start at about £3,000 to £5,000 and grant incentives will be available later this year. Payback will depend upon your hot water usage and the future cost of energy but for a typical system it is about 10 years.
Other Green Energy – using heat pumps to convert the earth’s air into useful energy will become common place in the future and these systems deliver 4 units of energy output for just one unit of input.

December 2011 - The Government has announced a consultation to amend the Feed in Tariff rates - until this has been clarified, the investment decision for Solar electric is uncertain - we advise waiting until the situation is clarified.
